In Marathon players in groups or alone infiltrate restricted locations to scavenge valuable items and resources, complete contracts from various factions mainly comprised of mega-corporations such as Traxus, NuCaloric, and CyberAcme , kill other enemy players, fight off NPC combatants, then ex-filtrate from the locations before a 25 minute timer expires (26 minutes if including final ex-filtration opportunity). Once a run is complete players are returned to their home menu's and can store valuables they've earned, re-gear for next runs, unlock faction exclusive upgrades using in-game earned currency called credits and/or alongside resources they have extracted with, claim codex objectives for cosmetics, lore entries, audio logs, and bragging rights. Players within the home menu can also access the premium currency store for cosmetics, and also the current and past reward passes which can be progressed through with the use of a gained currency via season rank level up known as silk.
Currently, Marathon can only be played in either a group of up to 2 other players, or Solo, with a expanding roster of playable characters known as Shells, synthetic bodies with enhanced attributes and unique powers, currently there are 7 total Shells, one of the Shells being gated as its own form of play-style which is named Rook, unlike other Shells, Rook is limited in what it can do, it has no contracts, cannot equip gear from your vault, cannot be with a group of other players (though temporary alliances can be made within game with the use of selectable voice-lines or proximity voice chat), and cannot enter special maps such as Cryo Archive, and special game-modes such as ranked and experimental Duo's only game-mode. Rook is also forced into joining matches late, usually around 10-11 minutes into a currently active match.
Players can equip a variety of items and weapons to aid themselves and other teammates, the current list of equipment is:
-Weapons: Currently comprised of Assault rifles, Precision rifles, Marksmen rifles, Sniper Rifles, Pistols, Sub-Machine guns, Machine guns, Shotguns, Rails-guns, and Special. All weapons belonging in certain ammo categories.
-Ammunition: Light/Heavy/MIPS Rounds, Volt Batteries/Cells
-Shields: negates a percentage of damage taken and while losing from its own HP pool, ranging from 1-4 bars of charges
-Equipment Items: Frag Grenade, EMP Grenades, Heat Grenades, Smoke Grenade, Flechette Grenade, Chemical Grenade, Claymore, Ammunition Bag, Bubble Shield, Proximity Sensor, Trap Pack.

-Cores: Can provide small to significant benefits for all or specific shells, such as granting enhanced reload and aiming speed for the Destroyer shell, or increasing loot speed when opening locked doors and containers for all shells.
-Implants: grant stat benefits (and at times stat penalties for balancing) ranging for all stat categories in three different slots, being head, torso, and leg.
